ICE Meeting: E-Commerce
Speaker: Steven M. Shepherd, Spartan Internet Consulting
At the June meeting, several Greater Lansing-area professionals were on hand to share ideas and learn about "E-commerce and Search Engine Optimization." Steven Shepherd, "Digital Metric Magi" of Spartan Internet Consulting spoke about digital metrics and search engine optimization. In his presentation, he explained in detail how to build a website for a potential company, and test its online competitiveness--all for free! He demonstrated such websites as Wordpress, Google Analytics and Blogspot.
Shepherd stressed that when it comes to promoting a website, content is king. Appropriate, and attractive, content is the best way to get visitors to a website and, more importantly, to get them to stay there. He mentioned techniques for enhancing a website's traffic, including internet press release sites, such as PRLog and PRLeap, plus how to get your site mentioned on other respected websites. Shepherd encouraged businesses to create accounts with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, and said that HootSuite is an effective tool for managing these sorts of accounts. He also mentioned that websites like Digg and Reddit have potential for attracting attention to the company's website. Finally, Shepherd recommended that new businesses create email accounts associated with the business, rather than one particular person.
Mattan Alalouf, a new member of the ICE team, announced upcoming events, including Entrepreneur Connect, an event taking place June 9-10 in East Lansing. Announcements can be found online at ICE Meetup Files.
Meeting attendee Jordan Skole recommended the book "Business Model Generation" by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur. This resource explains a number of business model patterns in an accessible way.
