In the past two decades, farmers' markets have been rapidly regaining popularity in the U.S. Farmers find a number of advantages in selling at farmers' markets. By selling directly to their customers without going through middlemen, farmers can charge retail prices for their produce. A farmers' market is also a good place for new growers who are perfecting production skills and learning which products customers want. In addition, many growers enjoy the interaction with customers and other vendors. They are currently close to 2,900 farmers' markets in the U.S.

MIHELP Consortium

The Michigan Higher Education Land Policy (MIHELP) Consortium is the first public-private, multi-university, inter-disciplinary partnership designed to address the fundamental research and outreach void in urban and metropolitan issues in Michigan. The consortium includes Michigan State University, Wayne State University and Grand Valley State University. MIHELP leverages the resources of its component institutions to conduct research and outreach, including publishing a major report on the current status of Michigan cities (State of Michigan Cities: An Index of Urban Prosperity) and their surrounding regions, hosting a Michigan Metropolitan Seminar Series, and conducting path-breaking studies on critical metropolitan issues. Inter-university partnerships at this scale are rare due to the difficulties inherent in this type of collaboration. For more information on MIHELP, go to www.mihelp.org/.
