Belle Island is a picturesque island of about 982 acres located in the Detroit River. It is connected to the city by the MacArthur Bridge and is managed by the Detroit Department of Parks and Recreation. The island was once home to a large deer population. In 2004, the deer were captured and moved to a zoo, where they are forming part of a nature center. Today, Belle Island is home to a Coast Guard Post, yacht club, aquarium, zoo, botanical garden, picnic sports facilities, golf course, and wheelchair accessible trails.
