The Genesee County Land Bank (GCLB) was created in 1999 in response to increasing incidences of abandoned property in the aftermath of economic downturn in the city of Flint. GCLB is empowered by tax foreclosure laws to repossess lands and abandoned property, restore them to commercial and/or residential value, and return them to the real estate market. The institution has been repeatedly sited as a national leader in innovative measures geared towards urban renewal and local economic development.
