The Land Policy Research program was established at LPI in November 2007 to address the paradigm shift in society's pressing land use issues and the increased demand for new and anticipatory land use and strategic growth information in the realm of public policy. It has the following vision, mission, goals and objectives:

Vision
To be the pinnacle of catalytic, integrative and transformational science-based knowledge that drives land and place-based policies and strategies for prosperity within the framework of a contemporary land-grant model.

Mission
Generate timely, relevant and transformational research by bridging the gap between science and practice in land and place-based policy strategies for prosperity.

Goals

• Engage in anticipatory research to advance innovative public policy on growth and prosperity in the New Economy.
• Build knowledge to support policy and decision-making in emerging land use challenges and opportunities. 
• Pioneer research in such emerging areas of land use as placemaking, renewable energy and regional prosperity.
• Become the brain-trust in Michigan for integrative, forward-looking, and thought-provoking policy research and decision-making.
• Become a national leader in strategic growth and prosperity science.

Objectives

• Resource Michigan's leaders and thinkers with quality informatics (visual and data) for progressive land use policy decision-making.
• Produce transformational information that translates into mindset change for prosperity.
• Produce a stream of research products that are timely, relevant and objective to confront the realities and myths of growth and prosperity in the New Economy.
• Build knowledge in emerging areas to support strategic policy choices in Michigan.
• Strategically focus research on priority activities.
